The Neuroscience PhD course covers diverse neuroscience fields, such as circuits and systems, affective, computational, translational and clinical neuroscience, cognitive, behavioral and neuroimaging. PhD students will find a multidisciplinary environment, ranging from bioengineering to medicine, from mathematics to neurobiology, from physics to psychology and statics, and cutting-edge facilities.

Two major graduate paths: Doctorate in Research and Doctorate in Psychology

As a doctoral student in the Zeitgeist School of Neuroscience (ZSNeuro) you will be a part of one of the leading and largest clinical neuroscience departments in Europe. The PhD and PsyD in Clinical Neurosciences will develop your skills through a range of research and practical training.

The department offers excellent opportunities for high quality research training in wide-ranging leading areas of clinical neuroscience. Much of the graduate research in the department is interdisciplinary and in collaboration with research leaders at other research centres. In addition, the department as a whole sponsors regular seminars and public lectures which attract distinguished national and international speakers.

ZSNeuro incorporates six divisions each of which hosts world-leading programmes in basic, translational and clinical research.

  • Centre for Prevention of Addictions
  • Division of Clinical Neurology
  • Division of Clinical Psychology (PsyD)
  • MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit
  • Division of Neurofeedback
  • Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging

You will be admitted directly to a particular research area and you will work alongside your supervisors to develop your programme of study which is normally part of a larger research group with shared interests. You will not normally do laboratory rotations.

There are no taught courses examined by written papers but there is a wide range of courses and workshops available across the Medical Sciences Division and you will be encouraged to attend regular departmental and divisional seminars.

The goal of this program is to train students in current methodologies and technologies that are relevant for advanced clinical neuroscience and to communicate skills and knowledge to translate basic research concepts into applied clinical research and clinical studies. This goal is pursued through courses that are directed by scientists in basic neuroscience as well as by research-oriented clinical neuroscientists. As a result, the program provides the opportunity to acquire biochemical, physiological, and clinical medical and psychological as well as computational skills in neuroscience, always with an eye toward clinical relevance and applicability. Psychosocial, gender, and ethical issues in neuroscience are important and underline the practical and societal relevance of the field.

Our aim is to foster independent research and critical thinking in clinical neuroscience. This will provide a solid basis for the future scientific careers of participating students. The provided courses offer the opportunity to learn about aspects related to the applicant’s own project but also to be trained in academic skills such as scientific writing, public presentations, statistical analysis, or gender medicine. The course program gives participants the opportunity to look beyond their own research topic to become fully qualified researchers and leaders in the field.

The program offers internationally recognized mentors with a strong research background and provides the opportunity for local and international interdisciplinary networking.

The program is run in collaboration with the PhD program “Neuroscience.”

PhD in Clinical Neuroscience

Clinical Neurosciences offers excellent opportunities for high quality research training, for both clinical and non-clinical graduates, in wide-ranging leading areas of clinical neuroscience.
