New Study Reveals AI Lacks Independent Learning, Poses No Existential Threat

Recent research from the University of Bath and the Technical University of Darmstadt has shown that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT cannot learn independently or acquire new skills without explicit instructions. This finding dispels fears of these models developing complex reasoning abilities and posing existential threats to humanity.

The study, published as part of the proceedings of the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL 2024), reveals that LLMs have a superficial ability to follow instructions and excel at language proficiency. The research team, led by Professor Iryna Gurevych, conducted experiments to test the ability of LLMs to complete tasks they had never encountered before. Dr. Harish Tayyar Madabushi, a computer scientist at the University of Bath and co-author of the study, emphasized that the fear of LLMs developing hazardous abilities like reasoning and planning is unfounded. The study demonstrated the absence of emergent complex reasoning abilities in LLMs, suggesting that these models can continue to be deployed without safety concerns.

However, the potential misuse of AI, such as generating fake news and increasing the risk of fraud, still requires attention. Dr. Tayyar Madabushi noted that it would be premature to enact regulations based on perceived existential threats.

Future Research Directions

Professor Gurevych added that while the study shows that AI does not pose an existential threat, it does not mean AI is entirely without risk. Future research should focus on other risks posed by LLMs, such as their potential to be used to generate fake news.
